Literary Lunches

An Intergenerational Book Club 2011-2012 Program
Do you like to read and talk about books? For several years, the Berkeley Heights Education Foundation has sponsored a “Literary Lunches” program at Columbia Middle School. This program brings together students, staff and senior citizens to discuss a book while enjoying treats provided by the BHEF. This program will continue during the 2011–2012 school year, with two sessions each planned for the 6th and 7th grades and one session for 8th grade (there are separate sessions for each grade). Interested students will have the opportunity to sign up through their Language Arts/English teachers and receive a pre-selected book courtesy of the BHEF. Books are also provided to participating seniors. On the day of the session, participants will gather in the CMS Media Center for conversation and refreshments.
This year’s sessions and book titles are:
Fall
7th Grade - The Thief Lord
6th Grade - Code Talkers
8th Grade - The Hunger Games
Spring
7th Grade - Maus
6th Grade - When My Name Was Keoko
If you are an interested Columbia Middle School student, please contact your Language Arts/English teacher to sign up. If you are an interested senior, please contact BHEF trustee Alice White via e-mail at bhef@bhef.info to sign up. You can attend as many sessions as you would like. Due to the popularity of a special book club session that convened at Governor Livingston High School last year to discuss Three Cups of Tea (part of a “Pennies for Peace”-inspired initiative), a similar session is being planned for the fall. Discussion will center on the book Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea.

The event was generously underwritten by our Partner in Education, Connell Company.
