BHEF GRANT PROGRAM

BHEF Grants Awarded for the 2007-2008 School Year

Over the past 14 years, the Berkeley Heights Education Foundation has funded programs totaling over $247,700. The BHEF awarded these funds to educators in the district who every year are given the opportunity to apply for grants to support programs and related equipment that promote creative and effective teaching techniques.  It is the goal of the BHEF to enhance the learning experiences of students and to help build ties between the schools and the community.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the BHEF awarded approximately $30,000 for many exciting programs and technology which not only benefit the students in the schools, but also support the entire community.

  • $750 to purchase a portable induction cooktop and cookware for use at GL.  Students will be able to use the latest technology to explore safe, efficient heating methods.
  • $2510 to purchase Smoker Aging Simulation Software for use at Columbia.  Students will be able to observe how smoking prematurely ages the skin/face using actual photographs.
  • $750 to fund a photography seminar at GL by professional photographer Nancy Ori.  Students will explore the concept of environmental portraiture with Ms. Ori.  Their works will be displayed in a local exhibition.
  • $360 to fund an evening event for Hughes students and parents exploring still life watercolors.
  • $2530 to fund the purchase of a hands-on, interactive plasma device for use at GL.  This device will allow students to engage in real scientific laboratory experiments in the areas of basic chemistry and physics, plasma physics and fusion energy.
  • $2950 to Columbia for the creation of an outdoor stage area to facilitate “open mic” opportunities.
  • $470 to purchase a wall map of Berkeley Heights at Woodruff.  This map will enhance student’s understanding of their community and teach specific geographical and historical concepts.
  • $200 to purchase books at Columbia which model exemplary texts.  Using these models, students will be encouraged to refine their writing skills.
  • $4600 to complete the outdoor classroom at the Early Childhood Center at Hamilton Terrace.  The BHEF and our partner in education, Fettes Brothers Landscaping and Construction, developed, funded and built an outdoor classroom during the 06-07 school year.  This grant provides additional materials which will make this space more functional for the Hamilton Terrace teachers.
  • $7000 to purchase a Promethean “Smart Board” at the Early Childhood Center at Hamilton Terrace.
  • $2130 to purchase Chemistry software at GL.  This software will enable students to observe and manipulate simulations of chemistry concepts that are often difficult to visualize.
  • $3370 to purchase microscale equipment at GL.  This equipment will allow Chemistry and Biology students to obtain higher quality lab results while consuming, being exposed to and disposing of smaller quantities of materials.
  • $2500 to purchase a sound system at GL.  This system will be available to all student groups and clubs as needed for their events.
