Over the past 13 years, the Berkeley Heights Education Foundation has funded programs totaling over $222,700. The BHEF awarded these funds to educators in the district who every year are given the opportunity to apply for grants to support programs and related equipment that promote creative and effective teaching techniques. It is the goal of the BHEF to enhance the learning experiences of students and to help build ties between the schools and the community.

During the 2006-2007 school year, the BHEF awarded approximately $25,000 for many exciting programs and technology which not only benefit the students in the schools, but also support the entire community.

• $5,000 to purchase two math carts, one for Columbia and one for GL. These carts will house a laptop computer, LCD projector, mathematics manipulatives and drawing tools.
• $4,100 to purchase portable art gallery displays which will allow district staff to showcase student work throughout the year and at Teen Arts and Expo.
• $2,750 to provide a cross curricular poetry residency with poet Luray Gross at Columbia Middle School. 7th graders will explore the themes of "social justice" and "equality for all" through the reading, writing and discussion of poetry.
• $2,500 to implement a creative and interactive program, Forest Friends, at the Early Childhood Center. This program demonstrates character building qualities that can be used by children when making responsible decisions for themselves.
• $2,400 to purchase a Dell laptop computer plus physics software for GL students.
• $2,200 to provide a multidisciplinary unit integrating literature, art and history. Mr. Floyd Cooper, an artist, who focuses on Black American culture will visit Woodruff School to demonstrate a subtractive drawing technique. Students in the 4th and 5th grade will create original artwork.
• $1,350 to purchase the Stock Market Game, an educational simulation that teaches about the stock markets. High School student participants will develop skills in math, language arts, research and critical thinking, while building and maintaining a portfolio of stocks and/or mutual funds.
• $1,000 to purchase a scanner, a digital camera and software for the GL newspaper, The Highlander.
• $970 to purchase four microscopes for the 5th grade science curriculum in all three elementary schools.
• $950 to purchase photography equipment which will allow the High School Art Department to teach students how to create Polaroid images and Emulsion transfers.
• $550 to provide Woodruff 5th graders the opportunity to combine physical activity and social skills (etiquette) through the teaching of ballroom dancing.
• $500 to provide 25 Advanced Art students with the opportunity to learn about oil pastel drawings from Lawrence Capiello and to take a field trip to the New Jersey Botanical Gardens for the creation of plain air drawings of botanical life using oil pastels.
• $410 to purchase two choking mannequins to enrich the fifth grade health curriculum at Woodruff School.
• $320 to purchase a fitness assessment program, which integrates health, physical education and technology for all Columbia Middle School students.
• $185 to purchase a classroom simulation kit to supplement the American Studies I curriculum.
• $150 to provide a program for 11th and 12th graders and their parents about making the transition from living at home to being away and living on their own at college.
